History
Since 1918, the Norwegian Band Federation (NMF) has ensured a foundation for negotiating and better financial conditions for all voluntary bands in Norway.
Through membership in the NMF, members and bands are also part of an ambitious and well-developed musical fellowship, hopefully
making it easier and more appealing to be associated with band music.
The band movement is characterized by being down-to- earth and offering music for everyone, and plays an important part of
cultural life in Norway. School bands are especially integral to the celebrations of 17th of May, the Norwegian Constitution
Day, but the NMF is organizing events and developing various projects throughout the year. The National Championships for
brass and wind bands are held each year in Bergen and Trondheim. In addition to that, the NMF also stage yearly championships
for school bands. Several thousand school band musicians compete in wind, brass, twirl and marching.
Providing better conditions
The Norwegian Band Federation works continuously to maintain a productive dialogue with partners and supporters in parliament
and government, and commercial and educational institutions, in order to provide the best possible conditions for its members.
Another important task is to provide information and advice to individual members and board members.
Long traditions
The Norwegian Band Federation will strive to present the band movement, and the rich cultural tradition in which bands operates,
so that they will continue to be active purveyors of music in the cultural life of Norway well into the future.
Bergen
The main office of The Norwegian Band Federation, with most of the administration, is situated in Bergen, with eight regional
offices handling most of the day-to-day tasks.
